ABOUT LOCK DOWN BJJ

MARTIAL ARTS IN LAKE RONKONKOMA

A MESSAGE FROM THE PROFESSOR

One of the key things I have taken from BJJ and its lifestyle is not just the combative art and the fighting but the willingness to help others and change lives. When I opened Lock Down Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu one of my hopes and dreams was to contribute in some way in helping make the world a better place – if even in a small way. My dream was to create a place that people could call home and a place where everyone was family. As a lifelong martial artist, my dream was to share my greatest passion in life, to touch lives and to inspire positive change and hopefully to make dreams happen for others.

Since its inception, Lock Down Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has grown into a wonderful family of lifelong friends. Together – students, instructors, fighters, champions, and staff – we push each other to become better, we challenge each other to grow, and we inspire each other to be the best that we can be – mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We are from all parts of the globe, we are from all occupations pilots, students, laborers, office managers, truck drivers, police officers, firefighters, cleaners, investment professionals, salespeople, entrepreneurs, accountants, and so much more. We are old, young, fit, not-so-fit, and everything in between. We are all different. We are all extraordinary, we are all unique, yet we are all one.

Of all that I have done in my BJJ career so far, titles, world championships, etc. What I am most proud of is Lock Down Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and not its business success but the fact that it is what I dreamed it to be. It has become that special, wonderful place where everyone is family. All of you inspire me every day to become the best person that I can be. I only hope that being part of Lock Down Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has helped you too, in some small way, to become all that you can be in life.

Joe Thompson
Joe ThompsonHEAD INSTRUCTOR | BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU BLACK BELT 2ND DEGREE | 2X WORLD CHAMPION
Joe has been training one form of combative art or another since he was 14 years old, studying and competing in systems such as Tae-Kwon-Doe, Muay Thai, American Combat, wrestling, and boxing. He was then introduced to Renzo Gracie back in the mid ’90s which is when his jiu-jitsu journey began.

After training for some time under Renzo Gracie, he has stopped training for some time. It was in 2001 when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease he felt the need to make changes to his diet and training habits. It was from that point on that he dedicated himself solely to training mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. That dedication drove him to compete professionally as a mixed martial artist in shows such as Ring of Combat.

It wasn’t until 2005 that Joe met Alexandre Soca, a Carlos Gracie, Jr. black belt since 1994 and a member of the famed Gracie-Barra camp. Joe was promoted to Black Belt by Soca in 2013 after winning 2 gold medals at the IBJJF World Championships that year.

Today, Joe believes in and lives the complete jiu-jitsu lifestyle, dedicating himself to conditioning, eating healthy, and training. It is those learning principles and lifestyle beliefs he brings to his students, along with showing them that hard work and dedication at any age leads to results and a happier healthier lifestyle. Here are some of Joe’s accomplishments:

  • 2019 IBJJF European Champion
  • 2X World Champion
  • 5X Pan American Champion
  • Abu Dhabi Qualifier Silver medalist
  • 2017 and 2018 Worlds Silver medalist
  • Multiple time IBJJF Champion and Medalist
  • Multiple time NAGA Champion and Medalist
